The Toyota Carina is one of the most overlooked JDM sedans arriving in the US market right now. While buyers chase Mark IIs and Chasers, the Carina delivers the same ST215 platform, the same 3S-FE engine, the same 4WD system, and a 5-speed manual in a body that nobody is paying a premium for yet. That window will not stay open forever.

The 3S-FE is a 2.0L naturally aspirated inline-four producing 133 HP and 137 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual and rear-biased 4WD. It is the same engine family used across Toyota’s performance platforms of this era, known for smoothness, reliability, and a service life that rewards proper maintenance. This car has clearly been maintained with care.

The OEM Toyota seat doilies are intact throughout the interior. This detail matters more than it sounds. Seat covers in this condition on a car this age mean someone was actively protecting the interior, not just using it. Grey vinyl underneath, white exterior. BBS wheels fitted with new Goodyear 165/50R16 tires. The original Toyota radio with 6-disc CD changer and cassette player is still in the dash and works. A/C blows super cold.

    Mileage: 97,070 miles (156,225 km).
Fuel economy: approximately 24 MPG city / 30 MPG highway / 27 MPG combined based on real-world 3S-FE 4WD data.

    Interesting Facts

    • The Toyota Carina and the Toyota Caldina GT-T share the ST215 chassis designation. The same basic platform that underpins this everyday sedan also underpins the turbocharged AWD Caldina GT-T with the 3S-GTE rally engine. The Carina represents the practical end of that platform’s range.
    • The 3S-FE was one of Toyota’s most widely produced engines of its era, appearing in the Camry, Celica, Caldina, Carina, Corolla, and several other models. Its broad use across the lineup means parts availability in the US is better than almost any other JDM engine of this period.
    • OEM Japanese seat covers, called “seat doilies” in collector circles, were a standard accessory purchased new by many Japanese car owners to protect original upholstery. Finding them intact and in good condition on an imported vehicle is a reliable indicator that the original owner treated the car as an investment rather than just transportation.
    • The Toyota Carina nameplate ran from 1970 to 2001, making this 2001 example one of the last Carinas ever produced. Toyota replaced it with the Allion in 2001. A car at the end of a nameplate’s production run often represents the most refined version of the platform.
    • The Toyota Carina was never officially sold in the United States. This example qualifies for legal import under the federal 25-year exemption rule.

    About Us

Our team has worked with Japanese vehicles for over 25 years, first in Europe and Japan, now at JP-TRADE in Holiday, Florida. Mechanical preparation is done by Japanese mechanics at our prep station in Toyama, and we drive our cars before they reach a new owner. See our full process.

If you made it this far, here is a little bonus for you.

Why did Toyota end the Carina nameplate after 31 years?

The Toyota Carina ran from 1970 to 2001. For three decades it was one of Toyota’s core Japanese domestic sedans, selling in enormous numbers to buyers who wanted a reliable, practical, well-built car at a reasonable price. By 2001, Toyota’s lineup had become crowded with overlapping nameplates serving similar buyers, the Carina, the Corona, the Caldina, and several others were all competing for the same customer. Toyota’s solution was to consolidate. The Carina was replaced by the Allion, a new nameplate designed to cover the same market space with a more modern platform. The Carina name was retired, quietly, after 31 years and millions of units. Most people outside Japan never noticed it was gone because most people outside Japan never knew it existed in the first place.
