In Japan the 4AGE Blacktop is so sought after as a swap engine that buyers regularly purchase entire running cars just to pull the motor. The fact that this is a complete, clean, Florida-titled Carina GT in perfect condition is almost secondary to what is under the hood.
The 4AGE Blacktop 20v is the fifth and final generation of Toyota’s 4A-GE engine, developed with Yamaha. Five valves per cylinder, individual throttle bodies, 11:1 compression, 7,800 rpm redline. 165 HP from 1.6 liters, naturally aspirated. Stock it revs like nothing else from this era. With a proper turbo setup, builders regularly reach 300 to 350 HP on a chassis that weighs almost nothing, which is why the engine has a following that has lasted 30 years.
The AT210 Carina GT is the only factory sedan Toyota ever fitted with the Blacktop 4AGE. Never sold outside Japan. If you want this engine in a complete, registered, road-legal car rather than on an engine stand, this is one of the very few ways to get one.
Driver and passenger airbags, both fitted, which was an optional extra on this platform. Interior is clean, non-smoking, perfect condition throughout. Weds Raviron Selzer wheels with new 195/50R16 tires. CarPlay installed.
Price: $12,500.
Mileage: 41,530 miles (66,834 km).
Interesting Facts
- The 4AGE engine family was co-developed by Toyota and Yamaha over five generations from 1983 to 1998. Yamaha engineered the cylinder head and valve train for each generation. The Blacktop 20v was the most technically advanced iteration, with five valves per cylinder and individual throttle bodies that give each cylinder its own airflow path, reducing interference between cylinders at high RPM.
- The AT210 Carina GT is the only production Toyota sedan ever fitted with the Blacktop 4AGE from the factory. Toyota installed the engine in several sports and performance cars during the same era, including the AE111 Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno, but the Carina GT is the sole factory application in a four-door sedan body, making it a specific and unusual configuration.
- The 4AGE Blacktop’s individual throttle body setup means each cylinder draws air through its own dedicated intake opening rather than sharing a common plenum. At high RPM this arrangement reduces pressure wave interference between cylinders and allows the engine to breathe more freely, contributing to the sharp throttle response and high redline the engine is known for.
- The Toyota Carina nameplate ran from 1970 to 2001. The AT210 generation, which this car belongs to, was the last Carina before Toyota replaced it with the Allion. The GT variant with the Blacktop engine was produced only in the final years of the AT210 run, making the production numbers for this specific configuration genuinely small.
About Us
We’ve been working with Japanese vehicles for over 25 years. Long before opening our location in the United States, our team was importing and servicing these vehicles in Europe when many of them were still new.
Because of that experience, we know these platforms extremely well. Every model has its own weak points, and we inspect and address them before the vehicle is offered for sale.
All vehicles are serviced at our facility in Japan before shipping. Fluids, belts, filters, batteries, and common failure points are inspected and replaced when necessary.
Unlike many dealerships, we actually drive our vehicles. They don’t sit in a parking lot. Our trucks and cars are used regularly so we can verify reliability before they reach their new owner.
When you buy from us, you’re getting a vehicle that is fully prepared and ready to drive from day one.
JP-TRADE is our first location in the United States, supported by a team of more than 40 people across Europe, Japan, Korea, China, and the U.S.
If you made it this far, here is a little bonus for you.
Why do people buy entire cars just to pull this engine?
The 4AGE Blacktop costs between $3,000 and $6,000 as a bare engine on the US import market, more for low-mileage examples in good condition. A complete running car with the same engine, a clean title, working A/C, and new tires costs $12,500. The math works out to nearly the same number once you factor in the cost of sourcing the engine separately, the time spent finding a good one, and the verification required to know it is actually healthy before you commit to a swap. The buyers who understand this buy the whole car. The buyers who do not understand this pay more for the engine alone and wonder why the swap cost them twice what they expected.
